It could have been a contender

Performance is decent enough but it loses points because of limited overclocking potential

The lack of support for SLI and CrossFire multi-GPU shenanigans aside, we had high hopes for this Intel 965-based Foxconn board. After all, the 965 chipset is pretty much the proven king of Core 2 overclocking.

And with a list price of well under £100, the 9657AA promises high-performance Conroe thrills for chump change.

The reality is slightly less spectacular, however. If our overclocking tests are anything to go by, a merely adequate 375MHz is the most you can hope for here, which translates into a core clockspeed of 2.6GHz for the cheap 'n' cheerful Core 2 Duo E6300. And that's a crying shame.

Any result over 400MHz would have made this board a serious contender. As it is, the attractive list price comes at a significant cost in terms of overclocking headroom.
