Get set to unpack
The Galaxy S5 is finally here, and we've done our own huge preview with what could be your next smartphone. We've also got news on the Gear 2 and the Gear Fit, with its lovely curved display.
- Hands on: Samsung Galaxy S5 review.
And just stay tuned below to see everything you'll want to know about the new Samsung Galaxy S5 as it launches. Join us on this page for live updates, or follow TechRadar on Twitter for 140-character updates.
20.59 - And that's me, signing off. Thanks for putting up with this bewildering trip through Samsung's mind. I would say I'm off to get hands on, but that's already done. Might go and look for a starfish on the beach. Bye all!
20.58 And we're done! I can't remember exactly, but I think that's a lot shorter than last year. Then again, I was in a stupor from all the faux-broadway musical action Samsung was pumping out.
So what do we think? Big news? Exciting phone? Or slightly underwhelming version of the Galaxy S4 with fancy bits on top?
20.57 - We have a Samsung Galaxy S5 release date! April 11! That's a long time... the competition is going to be licking its lips at that.
20.56 - We're just going through the highlights now. See earlier to remember what the central tenets were... David is leaving the stage to applause. We want to take this moment in.
20.54 - 'A coach who won't give up on you.' 'We've worked out the workout'. Some great buzzphrases, Samsung.
20.53 - S Health (or Shealth, if you speak to Patrick Goss, TechRadar's Editor in Chief and resident comedy genius) has been updated and can track sleep, stress, food, weight and heart rate. They all seem a little interconnected if you ask me.
There's a heart rate sensor on the flash, and is the 'centerpiece' of the new S Health... yeah. OK.
20.51 - Gear Fit is taking the stage. It's a curved AMOLED display, can change the straps, there are designer options (and hypoallergenic) and it also will show notifications.
It's like a good and nice looking smartwatch. And it's compatible with 20 Galaxy devices! And it's got a heart rate monitor! And you can design your own wallpaper! And...and...well, we're seeing a video of a woman running now.
20.49 - Up to three days battery life this time around - why won't Samsung tell us how? Is it because it's Tizen?
It's also IP67 rated, and according to David 'From rainstorm, to dustproof, you've covered'.
And mega unlucky to hit those weather conditions.
20.47 - The Gear 2 lets you listen to music wirelessly and there's a heart rate monitor inbuilt... free your workout, people! Muted applause. We must be an unfit bunch here.
There's an infra red blaster with the WatchON app so you can control your TV as well... this is like that watch you wanted as a kid so you could change the channel in class and the teacher would have no idea how. Bit late, but we'll take it.
20.46 - The strap is swappable as the microphone, camera and IR blaster are all on the watch head. Going to help a lot of people who hated the old strap, that is. And there's a home button too so you don't keep pulling the hair out of your arm, should you so be follically endowed.
That's agony, when you do it 67 times a day.
20.45 - Oh, he's ruined the suspense. He's showing us the Gear 2. Five key areas here... settle in, kids.
20.44 - David is back on, to some pretty funky music. What's he going to talk about? We can only imagine.
20.43 - Did you know the Samsung Galaxy S5 has a fingerprint mode? It does, you know. It's not as simple as TouchID, but it's pretty good. You can make PayPal payments and lock parts of the phone using the fingerprint scanner. Handy indeed - and the accuracy is pretty good too, in the tests I did.
20.41 - Now talking about the Ultra Power Saving Mode. Apparently it's so powerful, such as disabling mobile data and going black and white on the screen - from 10% battery life left, you can last up to 24 hours, or the entire battery life of the Galaxy Gear.
20.40 - The S5 is water resistant... IP67 is pretty good. Samsung is talking about how good that is... but don't leave it in there too long, Jean is telling us. It's not waterproof, right?
20.39 - Here's something that will impress: theres now faster connections than ever before. Wi-Fi combined with LTE, allows a GB in just 30 seconds. MIMO 2x2 connection and 802.11ac might not seem like much, but it's really going to improve your Wi-Fi speeds.
20.37 - Talking Selective Focus now - which allows you to refocus the background of your shots. A great idea, but not great in execution as it takes a really long time to process and set up. Hopefully that will improve in the future as it could be really cool.
20.35 - Onto the camera now. A hybrid autofocus on a 16MP camera, and a dedicated chipset for the image processing. Explains why it was so impressive in our testing. 0.3 seconds for the autofocus is indeed good.
20.33 - Battery on show - it's 2800mAh battery, which apparently can manage 10 hours web browsing and 12 hours video playback. I'm not sure that's accurate given how badly web browsing has burnt phone batteries in the past. I hope to be proved wrong.
20.31 - Into the UI now. New settings menu on show - I wasn't impressed. Samsung calls it simple, but the order was a bit bonkers.
Just talking about the screen as well: a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED screen, and he's talking about how great Full HD is... he should just say that it's brighter now, thanks to the dynamic brightness and super dimness for when you're in a really, really dark place.
Mrs TechRadar is going to be happy about that one when she's trying to sleep.
20.30 - The five tenets of the Galaxy S5: 'Modern, Glam look', great camera, better battery, fitness and protection.
The back of the phone is rubbery plastic, and is actually rather nice in the hand. A lovely back. At least it's not pretending to be a leather notebook, eh?
20.27 - Dave's back, and he's announcing Jean-Daniel Ayme - VP of European Telecommunications Operations. He's also happy to be here on the stage, apparently. He doesn't overly look it.
*Note: does not bend.
20.22 - Some key specs: the Galaxy S5 will have super fast connectivity through 802.11ac, super fast autofocus and rich HDR, inbuilt fitness (including a hardware heart rate sensor below the flash)...
...And it's waterproof! Some people just lost their mind when that was announced.
20.19 - JK Shin, Co-CEO is out. He's saying that consumers don't want meaningless innovation. Humble reference to last year.
We want fitness devices, good cameras, great batteries. We want the Galaxy S5 apparently... AND HERE IT IS!
20.14 - David Park from the marketing team in Samsung is here. He loks chirpy. He said the name of the event and people clapped. Strong start.
20.13 - It's starting! It's finally starting! Some people are talking about their magic bodies and photography skills. This is probably to do with the S5.
Oh, no. Someone just used the phrase 'speed of life'. No.
20.06 - Well, seeing as we're all here and waiting, we should probably show you the phone ourselves. We've done some other news bits and pieces as well - check it all out here!
Hands on: Samsung Galaxy S5 review
20.01 - I thought they were done. We clapped. Now they've started another song... I feel like we may have encouraged this.
Wait, is this the same piece? Again?
19.58 - OK, this is going on a little too long now. I mean, I love orchestral sounds, but come on, five minutes of it? What is this, Disneyland? Someone bring some dubstep.
19.54 - Plinky music has just become louder. What could that mean for the S5? Huh? Always look for clues, people.
Actually, it's a proper orchestra. Oh, Samsung, you are spoiling us.
19.51 - Sitting down properly now. There was a proper scrum to get in. I think there was a centaur fighting a mink.
19:40 - Are you sitting comfortably? We are. Less than 20 minutes to go.
19:30 - Fuelled up on mini burgers we've now joined the scrum at the doors of the event space - and the doors are open! In we go - wish us luck...
18:30 - We're in! Sort of. We've got through the first queue and past the check point. Now we're in the holding area as the main event space goes through its final preparations.
A big banner hammers home the "speed, life, curiosity and social" buzz words Samsung has been touting throughout the build up to tonight.
16:00 (CET) - Just four small hours to go. The venue is ready, are you?
