Phone calls

Updated: read our full UK Palm Pre review

The Palm Pre is a stunning new touchscreen smartphone – the interface uses a card concept where you can reorganise the cards by flicking them to and fro, and up to remove them.

Apps for media playback, browsing the web, finding contacts – they are all designed around the card interface and flicking with your fingers.

You can interact with the screen and swipe with your finger in the gesture area below the main screen.

Overall, the Pre is a powerful, multi-tasking, touchscreen phone that will challenge the iPhone and may outshine the T-Mobile G1, Samsung Instinct, and Blackberry Storm.

Here's a rundown of the screens you can expect to see when using the Palm Pre.

Palm pre screen

WELCOME: The main screen – the first thing you see when you turn on the phone – with five icons below

Phone calls

Palm pre screen

CALLING: Dialing a phone number is extremely accurate – we never hit the wrong digit or letter

Palm pre screen

VOICEMAIL: The Palm Pre does not support visual voicemail in the sense that you can't see a list of voice mail messages – you have to dial to get your messages

Palm pre screen

HISTORY: You can view a quick call history, though – choosing between all calls and just missed calls

Palm pre screen

SHOW NAMES: Sparse options for dialling, sure – but one option is to be able to type on the keypad and see contact names instead of actually dialling

Palm pre screen

RINGTONES: The Palm Pre includes only a handful of ringtones, but you can turn an into MP3 into a ringtone easily

Messaging

Messaging

The Palm Pre is a good messaging phone, but not the best we have ever tried. It beats the iPhone, which is why we think the Palm Pre has a better shot as a business phone than a personal media player.

Palm pre screen

INBOX: The Pre automatically lists all of your email messages in one simple screen, and combines contacts as well

Palm pre screen

FILTERED VIEW: It's easy to add a mail account and set an option for whether you see all messages or only flagged messages

Palm pre screen

NEW MESSAGE: Typing up a new mail message is a bit awkward at first as you learn how to type on the keyboard. Auto-correction is fairly limited

Palm pre screen

CUT, COPY & PASTE: The Palm Pre offers copy and paste from the off!

Palm pre screen

Palm pre screen

Palm pre screen

Palm pre screen

ABOVE FOUR: When you create a new mail message, you can attach a document, an image, a photo, or even a video to the mail

Palm pre screen

IM: The Pre only supports AOL AIM and Google Talk for now, but we expect Palm to add more in the coming months

Palm pre screen

IM PREFS: There's only a few preferences for instant messaging accounts, such as whether you see notifications or hear IM sounds

Palm pre screen

MMS: Unlike the current Apple iPhone, the Palm Pre supports MMS messaging for attaching videos and photos

Palm pre screen

SUMMARY: The Summary screen shows a history of messages

Contacts

Contacts

On the Palm Pre its easy to track down conversations with both business and personal contacts because chat and text messages are combined into one view. Contacts from Facebook and Gmail also get nicely combined – which is great unless you do not manage your contacts well.

Palm pre screen

ABOVE: The contact list shows all contacts from Gmail and Facebook, but you can use universal search to find them easily

Palm pre screen

NO FACE: Contacts imported from Facebook will likely only show an email, but they are easy to edit

Palm pre screen

EDIT CONTACT: Any contact can be edited, so you can add phone number, address, and a picture you take with the Pre

Calendar

Calendar

Using the calendar on the Palm Pre is pure joy - it combines all of your appointments from Microsoft Exchange and Google Calendar into one. It syncs with web services nicely, adding both Gmail and Microsoft Outlook meetings in one view.

Palm pre screen

BUSY: The calendar view on the Pre shows blocks for when you are busy that week

Palm pre screen

DETAIL: You can press with a finger to see the details of any meeting – here, the meeting was imported directly from Google Calendar

Palm pre screen

NEW EVENT: You can also create a new event on the Pre, which syncs up automatically back to your online calendar

Palm pre screen

TODAY: The today view is unremarkable in that it only shows your scheduled meetings and local weather info, but nothing more

Palm pre screen

JUMP: The calendar function provides a quick Jump To feature that lets you see upcoming appointments

Palm pre screen

CHOOSE CALENDAR: You can configure which calendar you use for the Pre – the one for Facebook, Google Calendar, or the built-in calendar

Launcher and apps

Launcher and apps

There are only about 20 or so apps available on the Palm pre at present, but that will likely change soon - Palm will be offering a free SDK this year and has a long history of working closely with developers. In fact, there are thousands of apps available for the Pre if you count legacy apps that run using the free-to-try, third-party Palm Classic app (which costs $30 to own).

Palm pre screen

LAUNCHER: The Launcher is where you store all of the installed apps. You can drag any of them into the app area below the screen, but it only holds five maximum

Palm pre screen

CAMERA: The camera is very limited – it only allows you to change whether a flash is used and take the picture

Palm pre screen

SAMPLE SHOT: Outdoor photos like this one look good enough to compare to an entry-level digital camera

Palm pre screen

PHOTO ROLL: The photos screen shows you photos taken with the Pre. Most indoor photos look OK as well, but there is no control over lighting or white balance

Palm pre screen

PREFERENCES: You can only add an account for Facebook and Photobucket for uploading images you take with the Pre

Palm pre screen

PHOTOBUCKET: When you log in to Photobucket, you then have the option to upload photos directly to that free photo sharing site

Palm pre screen

SEND PHOTO: You can also send a photo by email or MMS, and choose to set the current photo as your wallpaper

Palm pre screen

UPLOAD: Uploading an image is quick over the Sprint 3G service or over Wi-Fi

Palm pre screen

IN VIEW: As you upload an image, you still see the photo so you can make sure it is the one you want

Palm pre screen

VIDEOS: Videos are listed with a thumbnail, but there are very few options – you can't edit videos at all or convert them to different formats

Palm pre screen

MEMOS: It's easy to write a quick memo to yourself using the built-in sticky notes app. There are few options for customising them, though

Palm pre screen

NEW MEMO: Here, you can type a memo and save it to the Memos screen for future reminders about your daily tasks

Palm pre screen

TASK LISTS: Like previous Palm devices such as the Centro and Treo, Palm includes a simple task manager to keep you organised

Palm pre screen

TASK VIEW: Tasks are shown in a simple list with a few options available for adjusting priority, but not rolling them up into projects

Palm pre screen

GOOGLE MAPS: The Palm Pre includes the full Google Maps client with directions, satellite view, and GOS locator

Palm pre screen

MAPS MENU: The Maps menu in Google Maps has a grayed looked that matches the Android version a little too much

Palm pre screen

MAP SEARCH: You can easily search for just about any location, including airports and businesses – just like the web version

Palm pre screen

DIRECTIONS: You can get turn-by-turn direction, but not with voice navigation or speech control (you can't speak destinations like you can on a G1)

Palm pre screen

SATELLITE VIEW: Like the web version, Google Maps on the Pre gives you a satellite option for viewing topographic details

Palm pre screen

TRAFFIC VIEW: The traffic view shows you congestion in populated areas

Palm pre screen

CLOCK: You can configure the clock with a digital or analog look. The digital look is a throwback to the first flip clock radios

Palm pre screen

ALARM: It's easy to set multiple alarms for waking up in the morning or reminders for your day

Palm pre screen

APP CATALOGUE: There is a paltry selection of apps at launch, but with a background in working closely with developers, that will likely change soon

Palm pre screen

LIMITED: Apps such as Pandora and the ConnectFour game from Electronics Arts reveal just how limited the selection really is

Palm pre screen

YOUTUBE: A built-in client for YouTube helps you get your viral video fix – but only in the sub-par standard def resolution

Palm pre screen

YOUTUBE SEARCH: You can quickly search for any video, similar to the YouTube XL and YouTube TV versions found online

Palm pre screen

AMAZON: Amazon shows up again – it provides a similar music download service on the T-Mobile G1

Palm pre screen

SIGN IN: Amazon MP3 uses the same login you use for buying books and other items on Amazon.com

Palm pre screen

SEARCH: You can search for artists by name, song, album title, or any other variable you can think of

Palm pre screen

BUY: When you are ready to buy, you see a larger version of the album art and a Buy button

Palm pre screen

DOWNLOAD: Status bars scroll across the screen as you download. And, with multi-tasking, you can switch to a different app while the music downloads

Palm pre screen

WI-FI: You can access a menu configure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings. Palm recommends using Wi-Fi when available to save on battery power

Palm pre screen

CALL INTERRUPT: During any activity on the Pre, including web browsing and checking your calendar, you will see alerts for any missed calls

Palm pre screen

SPRINT NAV: Sprint offers its own GPS-enabled client for finding your way around town that includes turn-by-turn instructions

Palm pre screen

DRIVE TO: With the Sprint Navigator, you only have to enter the "drive to" destination, since the GPS already knows where you are

Palm pre screen

EASY SEARCH: It's easy to search for common city destinations, such as airports and bus terminals

Palm pre screen

NAV SEARCH: You can also type in a search term, but – like Google Maps – the navigation features do not allow for voice input of locations

Palm pre screen

TRAFFIC INFO: Traffic information is fed to the Navigator program and mirrors what you find in the Google Maps app

Palm pre screen

SHARE MAPS: You can share navigational maps, but Sprint does not offer a sharing system that works like Google Latitude for sharing your current location

Palm pre screen

CALCULATOR: The calculator is not too glamorous and does not support a full scientific calculator view

Palm pre screen

DOC VIEWER: Like all Palm devices before it, the Pre supports document viewing for Office 2007, Office 2003, and many other file formats

Palm pre screen

EXCEL: Here, we pulled up an Excel file with spreadsheet data and the Doc Viewer formatted the cells perfectly

Palm pre screen

DOC VIEWER: The Doc Viewer supports the latest version of Word 2007 for viewing – but not editing – documents

Palm pre screen

PDF VIEW: You can also open Adobe PDF documents, and then zoom in and out on the document to read the text

Palm pre screen

SWITCH AND ZOOM: Here, a contract is open in the PDF View app which allows you to switch pages easily and zoom in on the text

Configuring settings

Configuring settings

The Palm Pre's useful comprehensive help and a reasonably intuitive interface means setting up web and PC connections and your email is easier than on many smartphones.

Palm pre screen

HELP: The Palm Pre includes a searchable help app that provides tips and instructions on using the device, helpful for learning new gestures

Palm pre screen

QUIET: One minor issue with the Palm Pre is that ringtone volume is not that loud compared to the iPhone or most Nokia and Samsung phones

Palm pre screen

SCREEN VIEW: You can adjust brightness and change how the screen locks on the Palm Pre

Palm pre screen

DEVICE INFO: Device info is fairly sparse, showing you the current OS version and a few salient details – such as battery life remaining

Palm pre screen

WIRELESS NETWORKING: You can attach to both open Wi-Fi networks and those with a passcode, but only over 802.11g – not 802.11n

Palm pre screen

BLUETOOTH: The Palm Pre support the latest version of Bluetooth for listening in stereo and using Bluetooth-enabled headsets

Palm pre screen

GEOTAGGING: One surprise is that you can configure the Palm Pre so it adds geotagging data to the photos you take

Palm pre screen

DATE AND TIME: There are a few options available for configuring the current date and time

Palm pre screen

UPDATES: This is where you will check to see if there is an update available for the Palm Pre webOS software

Palm pre screen

BACKUP: Palm offers a back-up utility that works with your PC for storing all pertinent data offline in the event that the device stops working or you lose it

Palm pre screen

LANGUAGES: There are only two languages supported at launch – English and Spanish

Web browsing

Web browsing

The Palm Pre is an amazing web device, which is not a big surprise since it uses the Webkit engine – the same one Apple uses for the iPhone.

Palm pre screen

FULL VIEW: Web sites fill the screen quickly and accurately, even for sites that use JavaScript

Palm pre screen

ZOOM: You can zoom in on a page by pinching your fingers together, or flicking out to zoom out

Palm pre screen

WEB SETTINGS: Under the settings screen, you can add a new card that will appear when you launch the browser with the site of your choosing

Palm pre screen

BOOKMARKS: It's easy to set a bookmark for the current site, and you can customise the name of the site if you want

Palm pre screen

WEB CARD: When you create a new card, you can name it and adjust the URL. It will appear when you first start the browser

Palm pre screen

HISTORY: Just as you can in a desktop browser, it is possible to review your browser history and clear the listings if need be

Palm pre screen

PREFERENCES: Palm includes a few options for blocking pop-ups, accepting cookies, and enabling JavaScript. Here is where you clear history, cookies, and cache as well

Palm pre screen

FACEBOOK: There isn't a client for Facebook yet that runs on the Pre, so you have to live with the mobile version that runs in the browser

Palm pre screen

MOBILE FACEBOOK: The mobile version of Facebook looks the same here as with any smartphone – with a truncated list of current status updates

Palm pre screen

MULTI-APPS: You can run multiple apps (using the card paradigm) and switch between them easy with just a flick of your finger

Palm pre screen

BROWSER CARDS: The browser uses cards as well – shown here in the main view when you start the browser. Just press the card for the site you want to visit
