Apple's iPad launch: live blog
22nd Oct 2013 | 16:47
Let's get excited
11.24 That's it. Tim's off stage. The hell is over. How was the iPad section the shortest part?
11.24 Here's the full run down of the iPad mini with Retina:
- Retina display added.
- 7.9-inch, 2048 x 1536
- A7 chip with 64 bit architecture
- 4x fast CPU tasks, 8x faster GPU tasks
- 10 hour battery life
- 2x faster Wi-Fi with MiMo
- Extended 4G support
- 5MP iSight Camera
- HD FaceTime camera
- No TouchID
- Color options: Silver & White and Space Grey & Black
- from $399 - 16GB Wi-Fi
- from $529 - 16GB 4G + Wi-Fi
11.23 It's a weird omission when both have an A7 chip.
11.22 Seriously, where's TouchID? Why is that not on either?
11.22 Which iPad is better? We'd argue for both... but at least the iPad Air has more new stuff.
11.20 Front and back covers: $79 for iPad Air, $69 for iPad mini 2.
11.18 iPad mini with Retina will cost $399, and the older one will cost $299.
11.16 The iPad mini now has Retina display. Surprise!
11.15 Definitely no TouchID.
11.15 This has been in development for years. Imagine if Apple had made this back then. Nobody would have bothered competing.
11.14 Jony Ive looks so, so sad when he's telling us about stuff.
11.13 The iPad 2 just won't die - it's still being sold for $399. Who would buy that when $100 more gets you the new one??
11.11 iPad Air release date is set for November 1.
11.10 This is basically an iPhone 5S. 5MP camera, Facetime HD, dual mics, 10 hour battery life, and comes in silver and white, and space gray and black. Will replace the iPad 4, and will start at $499 for Wi-Fi 16GB, and cellular will be $629.
11.09 A7 chip on board. 2x increase in graphical rendering. Doesn't look like it's Touch ID.
11.08 Weighs just one pound... or 453 g. That's Xperia Tablet Z beating. AND they also talked up Gizmodo! The feud is over!
11.06 43% thinner bezel. 7.5mm thick. 20% thinner across the entire device. Apparently this took years of work - every hundredth of a mm was hunted down and killed.
11.06 The iPad AIR? Whut? Who saw that coming? Thinner, faster, betterer... it's all new.
11.06 The internet in your hands you say?
11.05 Next generation of iPads is here. Phil is back. We'd love it if Tim was supposed to do it, but the autocue was down so he threw Schiller under the bus.
11.04 Actually, someone was using it to take a picture. Now THAT'S not right.
11.03 A fireman was using an iPad while in a truck. A surgeon has it in the OR. This doesn't seem right.
11.02 People using iPads in crazy places... that's how everyday they are. Underwater. On a lake, in a restaurant. Wait, that chef just looked at a picture of the food they were making?
11.02 It's video time.
11.02 475,000 iPad only apps.
11.00 We're kind of hoping he says 'And that's it! Thanks bye!'
11.00 170 million iPads sold. And apparently 81% of all tablet usage is iPad. You can talk about activations all you want, but apparently this is the big thing. iPad > everyone.
11.00 Cook is castigating us for doubting the iPad, thinking it would take on netbooks. Well, Apple is showing YOU GUYS. It's one of the successful products ever ever ever ever ever thankyouverymuch.
10.59 iPAD IPAD iPaD IT'S HERE.
10.58 Tim Cook just paused for about five seconds, staring at the auto-cue. This is the bigger story.
10.57 We could have done all of this in about three minutes at the start.
10.56 Office costs $99 a year. iWork is now free with a new Mac or iOS device. That's actually pretty cool.
10.56 Roger and Eddy are out-laming each other on stage right now. It's amazing.
10.55 Where's Jonney Shih when you need him?
10.53 Eddy just made an amazingly off the cuff joke about wearing a different shirt today. It made us chuckle. That's how low we've sunk. We don't even want the new iPad. We just want it to be over.
10.53 We're laughing at an iWork demo. We're working on Eddy Cue's face. In fairness, he looks a lot less like he's just rolled out of bed.
10.50 Cue isn't even pretending he's not looking at the low monitor. That's what's happened. Half the autocue has gone. This is more exciting than the fact we're getting to see iLife AGAIN.
10.49 Garageband now free with any new iOS device or Mac. We know this, right?
10.48 Look, Apple, this is all great. Garageband is great. iMovie is great. Kyle and drummers are great. If we repeat that before we go to sleep will you SHOW US THE IPADS?
10.46 Eddy Cue just confirmed the new iPad will be 64 bit. Now all the surprises are gone.
10.45 Apple is talking about the new iMovie interface. Essentially talking about how it's made iMovie look like Netflix.
10.44 iPhoto is being updated for Mac and iOS. iMovie is being overhauled for the same things. It's good to remember this will be free now. Keeps mentioning things that are only available on 64-bit chips. 64-bit iPad, anyone?
10.43 OH FOR THE LOVE OF OPTIMUS PRIME. We're on apps now.
10.42 Yay! Macs over. Come on iPads!
10.41 Fair play, Apple. It does look good both inside and out. You know how to do that.
10.39 And we're back on video. We're 40 mins in and no iPads. Buckle in, people, we're watching a machine cut things.
10.38 It will cost $2999 and release begins in December. 3.7GHz quad-core Xeon 12GB DRAM, 256GB SSD, 2GB VRAM. And it's quieter than a Mac Mini! AND it's assembled in the US!
10.37 Someone call Jessica Alba.
10.37 We're hearing about how cool this device is. Movies, music and more. It's so good. Blazingly fast, perfect computer, Phil is still struggling. HOW CAN WE SAVE YOU, MR SCHILLER?
10.34 Phil is usually rock solid on stage. Even channel bonding doesn't settle him down. It's doubly weird because the Pro is actually a really awesome machine. Up to three 4K displays? That's the future. Seriously.
10.33 EVERYONE on this stage seems really, really nervous. Phil can't even say teraflops without stuttering. Is autocue broken?
10.32 Mac Pro. Diamond cut. Loads of fans. Thermal core. Let's all take a moment of quiet to witness this engineering miracle. The future. Apple's vision.
10.31 Shipping today, if you're interested.
10.30 Macbook Pro 15-inch gets up to 8 hours battery life, has the quad-core Intel Crystalwell chip, has faster Thunderbolt... but forget that: it starts at $1999! Let's party like it's... wait, no, Apple wasn't having a good time then.
10.29 Starting at $1299. And it starts shipping today. Don't wait for applause, Phil.
10.28 Phil just called Batman the Black Knight. Nice. In fairness, he does dress in black. But it ruined the announcement that it has 9 hours battery and Thunderbolt 2 connectivity for faster speeds.
10.27 13-inch Macbook Pro is getting an update. Under 3.46 pounds. Just 0.71 inches thin. And is powered by an Intel Haswell 4th gen dual core chip. Faster integrated graphics.
10.26 He just said Mind. Blown. Copycat.
10.25 And now Phil Schiller is here to talk MacBooks.
10.24 And it's available today! And even an iMac from 2007 is allowed to get Mavericks. Thanks Apple! That's actually rather nice.
10.24 WHOA. Mavericks is going to be free. 'A new era for the Mac'. And it will be downloaded as an update... just like an app. (mindblownemoticon).
10.21 iCloud Keychain sounds useful, except for the fact that you need to use Safari. Hey, we're all about choice here.
10.20 The Mavericks are much more fun… dancing the night away and all that.
10.19 We're being mean. But Apple has to know the world is watching, getting ready to see iPads, and it's Trojan Horsing Mac software.
10.17 We're seeing how multi-touch gestures work on Mavericks, videos... and now we're being shown how to learn. You can drag quotes from one window to another. Tags. Images. Shoot us now.
10.15 We're basically getting the same spiel from before. Now's the time for a bathroom break or a drink, if you're desperate.
Does he remind anyone else of Walt's son from Breaking Bad?
10.14 Integrated graphics. They're Inte-Great! That's our joke. Federighi can have that though... someone text him. Or iMessage, actually.
10.12 OS X Mavericks is being talked about now, Craig Federighi is out now talking GPUs. Made a joke about developers being shy. People laughed. That'll put him at ease.
10.11 Cook mocking those that try to make tablets into computers. So... Microsoft?
10.11 Cook is definitely talking more slowly now. There's totally a man on the side of the stage waving his hands at him with a panicked look on his face.
10.11 Talking Macs now. The computers, not raincoats.
10.10 Justin Timberlake likes iTunes Radio. A billion songs listened to. 60 billion downloads on the App Store. Numbers Apple, numbers mean nothing when there's no enchanting device to get excited about.
10.09 Tim Cook tripping up a bit here with his words. Has he just been told the iPads aren't here yet?
10.08 iOS 7 is being talked about now. 200 million devices running the new software. Helps when you force download it, eh Apple?
10.07 Thank god that's over.
10.06 We're now watching a video of the launches in the retail stores globally. We're watching people shopping.
10.05 9 million sales of the iPhone pair in the first weekend. About eight of those are probably the iPhone 5C.
10.04 We're going to see amazing products from Apple. That's that sorted then.
10.03 Traditional start from Apple. Plinky plunky music, some stuff about making things perfect, a pencil, then Tim Cook came out.
10.01 There are some dancing dots. And lots of buzzwords. Abundance. Choice. Focus. Feel. BUBBLEZ!
10.00 And right on cue! We're off!
09.59 We're nearly at indie soft rock overload. Our internal hatred is a good barometer of an imminent start.
09.57 We've got the 'moment' shout. As in, the launch will begin in a moment. If you have a device, switch it to silent. That applies to all of us, if Apple tells us to.
09.55 Mr Cook is having a right laugh too, apparently. Probably spiking all the speakers' drinks so they fall asleep on stage.
09.53 Not really. Just a taste of the grade A humour we'll be spewing tonight.
09.52 Hold the phone, we just got this news: "The Apple event has been cancelled,. They said they feel overshadowed by Nokia's Windows RT tablet"
09.50 TAKE THAT MONEY, WATCH IT BURN SOMETHING SOMETHING RIVER LESSONS I'VE LEARNED. We're loving this very lyrically-apt music, Apple.
09.49 Want an appetite-whetter? A fuzzy Apple logo? Yeah, you do:
